RGB Split Colour Experiment

As mentioned in a previous post, I produced a split RGB colour experiment so I am prepared to use the technique for my own future music video. I downloaded Exo's 'Ko Ko Bop' music video which I took a section out of to edit. I have also provided the steps I took to achieve the effect below:

Below I included a tutorial for my future reference:

Directors' Inspirations

Instead of making a new list of directors, I compiled a mood board of music videos which I'd like to draw inspiration from. I have used this before, however, I thought this post to be appropriate for the board:

RGB Split Colour Effect

As mentioned before, I intend to use the RGB split colour technique seen in CL's music video- Lifted:
I found several tutorials on YouTube for producing a similar effect and also others which I may be interested in when editing my music video. (In one of the following posts I will provide an example of my experimentation with such techniques) These videos can be found below:

This tutorial demonstrates a similar effect to CL's music video, however, there is no distortion in the image. Therefore, another tutorial here, explains how a noise blur can be used to create distortion. Perhaps if I combine the two, I am able to achieve an effect closer to that used in CL's MV.

Lastly, I found another interesting tutorial for achieving an 80s style VHS look using After Effects. I shall experiment with this also as I think that it would contribute positively to an R&B track.

Theorists Notes:

Adorno
  • Capitalism is the opposite of true art.
    • The capitalist systems replace people’s true need of freedom of creating and genuine happiness.
  • False needs are cultivated in people by culture industries.
  • Popular music (a.k.a Pop Music) is a product of commodities sold to audiences believing it’s the true creation.

Hebdige
  • Different people believe in different things, therefore process emotions differently.
  • Audiences are free to resist the power of large companies.
    • ‘Indie’ genre.
    • Major companies are becoming indie as a result.

Dyer
  • People need a ‘star’- not a real person; just an image.
    • “Semi-mythological beings”
    • “Extraordinary + ordinary at the same time.
  • Audiences will want to continue to see the false being.
    • Strive to buy merchandise etc.

Negus

  • There are two ways to create an artist image:
    • Organic ideology of creativity
      • Natural- company nurtures the artist and strives to cultivate fame using a long term process.
      • Such artists are usually considered to have a genuine interest in the creation of music and fans.
    • Synthetic ideology of creativity
      • Synthetics- the company constructs such artists to produce fame and money in a short term process.
      • K-Pop is considered to be mostly made up of such companies, however, the Korean music industry has many other factors in addition to just capitalist money making groups.
      • Artists in this category are generally more concerned about making as much money as possible.

Editorial Description by YESASIA

EXO has been touring Asia from May to December 2014 for their first concert tour EXO from Exoplanet: The Lost Planet. Enjoy the concert on CD with this two-disc live album release that includes the group's performances of favorites like "Growl," "Wolf," MAMA, Black Pearl, Let Out the Beast and Baby Don't Cry as well as the members' special solo performances including Chen's Up Rising, D.O's Tell Me What is Love and Baek Hyun's My Turn to Cry. As a special treat to fans, the concert album includes as bonus tracks the rearranged studio versions of Black Pearl, Love Love Love, "Wolf" and "Growl" plus their new winter song December 2014!

This edition includes a 72-page photobook, a world tour map, and ten postcards.

Notes on the album

  • The album is matte black and large, perhaps the size of a 12” vinyl sleeve. The Exodus (‘Exo Planet’ is the fictional origins of the Exo boy group) symbol and album name is embossed in silver foil which creates an effect of leather, the album seems almost luxurious due to the modern colours and minimalistic design.
  • The back of the album has the tracklist CD1 and CD2 written up in a sans serif white and plain font to make it easy to read.
  • The entire album folds out like a book with the CDs and photo cards on the left, while a photo album and tour map poster are on the right. One CD is white, while the other is black which is an interesting contrast to the darkness of the entire album.
  • The photo cards can be found in a pouch on the left and everything is able to fit in their appropriate slots snuggly.
    • The photo cards are larger than normal (postcard size) compared to previous photo cards such as that of BTS’s album; The Most Beautiful Moment in Life.
    • They also contain a personal message and a signature by the members.
  • The front cover of the photo album has a shiny surface as opposed to the matte black of the entire case. It also shows a glossy picture of the members lined up in an arch, almost orchestral.
    • It contains pictures and information about their live performances (including their journey throughout their tour) and also lyrics to go with the songs which are on the CDs.
  • The map can be used as an A1 poster.

What is R&B Music?

I created a short presentation using prezi (below) to present my research for the question 'what is R&B music?' to better understand the genre I intend to work with.

Doodled Music Video Experiment

As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, I have finished a thirteen second doodle on an existing music video using Adobe After Affects.

Update

This morning, I received a reply to the email I sent to the Council House in Nottingham city centre, asking for a time slot in which I am able to film for my music video. The news is looking positive and I am yet to respond to the email which overall asks for a specific time frame in which they could perhaps allow me to film.

This does mean, however, that I must construct a rough plan which could be later applied to any music video I may make definite in the future (as I do not have a specific one chosen yet). My following posts will likely include me jotting down a few ideas for shots which I am able to take as soon as possible without lip synching. They could perhaps be used for parts where there are instrumentals, so I will likely take thirty-second clips.

It was also suggested, that if I am able to film inside, I will only have an hour (as I asked), therefore, I need to be as organised as possible and make a minimal amount of mistakes during filming.

Animated Scribble Effect

As I have mentioned before, I would like to use animation on top of my music video like in 'Eung Freestyle'. I found several tutorials on YouTube that show me how After Effects is used to do this. The tutorial that I discovered is below, and in my next post, I will provide my own experience with sing Adobe After Effects.

Locations- The Council House

Inspired by Black Pink's grand set in 'As If It's Your Last' music video, I'd like to perhaps create a set similar to this.

One of my favourite venues in Nottingham is the Council House in the town centre. Of course, permission is needed to film inside, however, I'd like to enquire about hiring the reception space for a few shots and perhaps even getting it for free since I intend to use it academically.

I must write an e-mail to the following address: councilhouse.events@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

A screenshot of the e-mail is found below:

Prop Making

Geometric shapes

I intend to make a series (three) of geometric shapes for my music video in large scale using duct tape and sourced wood (seen in the background of the bottom thumbnail, this was previously a cot that I found, taken apart).
  1. I removed the rods using a saw.
  2. Measured them to the appropriate length.
  3. Taped the two squares at the top together roughly.
  4. Made a trapezoid shape for the top using more tape. I reinforced this by covering all corners with tape.
  5. I added the pyramid point to the bottom before re-taping the entire construction for stability and aesthetic.

I decided to make these because I would like for each of my actors to have a certain characteristic. For an example, the actor who I intend to make these for will use them in the music video to suggest that she enjoys jewellery, diamonds and an expensive appearance. Of course, her costume will also contribute to the overall effect.

During the construction of this one shape, I learned especially that the use of props doesn't have to be expensive. This entire shape was made from things that I found for which people no longer have the use for and I think that it looks as good as something shop bought. I will continue to use this method of upcycling for the construction of my music video.
